Live rosin, live resin, hash, diamonds.

Concentrates are not a starting format, they are a graduation format. A single rice-grain dab can deliver more THC than an entire pre-roll. Below is the working guide for experienced shoppers ready to step up.

Solvent-based vs solventless

The cleanest dividing line in concentrates is solvent-based vs solventless. Live resin and shatter are hydrocarbon-extracted (BHO/PHO). Live rosin and ice-water hash use only pressure, heat, and water.

Live rosin is the apex of solventless concentrate work, made by sieving fresh-frozen flower into ice-water hash and then heat-pressing the result, producing a product so clean it tastes like the living plant.

The five formats

FormatExtractionTHC %Tier
Live rosinSolventless · ice-water + heat-press70 to 85%Premium
Live resinSolvent · BHO from fresh-frozen70 to 85%Mid-premium
HashSolventless · sieved trichomes40 to 60%Mid
ShatterSolvent · BHO from dried flower70 to 90%Mid
Badder / wax / crumbleSolvent · whipped BHO60 to 80%Mid
Both extract from fresh-frozen flower (preserving the full terpene profile). Live resin uses chemical solvents (butane, propane). Live rosin is solventless, pressed mechanically with heat, no chemical solvents. Live rosin is the premium solventless category; live resin is more affordable.

Potency & dose: rice-grain physics

A typical "dab" is 25-50mg of concentrate (rice-grain to small-pea sized). At 70-90% THC, that delivers 17-45mg of THC per dab, equivalent to a 0.3-0.5g flower joint compressed into a single inhale.

Onset under 1 minute (inhaled). Duration 1-3 hours. NY adult-use cap: 24g concentrate per day per adult.

Hardware: rigs, e-rigs, vape attachments

Rig: water-pipe-style apparatus + quartz or ceramic banger heated by butane torch. Manual technique. Best flavor.

E-rig: integrated electric heat element, set-and-forget temp control. More consistent. Less ritual.

510 cart attachment: smaller dose-per-hit; consumes concentrates in vape format. Convenient but less robust effect.

Optimal dab temperature: 480-540°F (preserves terpenes, prevents harsh combustion).

Concentrates FAQ

Connoisseur questions.

What is the difference between live resin and live rosin?
Live resin is a hydrocarbon-extracted concentrate made from flash-frozen fresh flower, preserving the full terpene profile. Live rosin is the solventless equivalent, sieving fresh-frozen flower into ice-water hash, then heat-pressing it. No chemical solvents involved. Live rosin is the apex of solventless concentrate work.
Are concentrates safe for beginners?
No. Concentrates are 5-10× the potency of flower. A single rice-grain dab can deliver more THC than an entire pre-roll. Start with edibles or pre-rolls; graduate to concentrates after several sessions of building tolerance.
What temperature should I dab at?
Optimal dabbing temperature is 480-540°F. Higher temperatures destroy terpenes and produce harsh, hot vapor. Lower temperatures preserve flavor + cannabinoid integrity. Quartz bangers + thermometers help; e-nails set-and-forget the temperature.
